Frequently Asked Questions

I'm worried about my teeth looking too big; how do I know they will suit me?

Rest assured we will walk you through the process of selecting the ideal smile for you. The shape, size, character and colour of the teeth are entirely within your choice and we will provide our professional opinion on what best suits you. We strive to provide you with a natural smile.

How long will dentures last?

When highest quality craftsmanship is combined with the best materials in the market, dentures can last between 8-12 years before a new set is ideal. This lifespan tends to be slightly less if you tend to grind your teeth.

How long will it take to have new dentures made?

This largely depends on what is required to meet your needs and your availability for appointments. We typically require 5-7 appointments, excluding any eases / adjustments if they are needed after treatment is complete.

How do I look after my denture?

To keep your dentures in top condition, it is best to remove them after a meal and brush them down with a toothbrush/ use an electric toothbrush with warm soapy water to remove any debris. Avoid using standard toothpaste as this is to abrasive for dentures. Before you go to bed, repeat this process and use a denture cleaner such as Polident or Steradent denture cleaning tablets to kill the bacteria that proliferate on the fitting surface of your dentures.

Always stick to the instructions given with that cleaning product to avoid permanent discoloration of the denture!

After you have done this, rinse the dentures thoroughly and keep them in water or in air-tight container.

I struggle to clean my dentures, am I doing something wrong?

Smoking and some foods can cause staining on the denture that is almost impossible to remove yourself with standard denture cleaning products. You may find a hard yellow plaque build-up underneath and on the sides of your back teeth that doesn't brush off easily.

These are easily resolved problems!

We offer a same-day professional cleaning service that can remove most stains and hardened plaque build up. We stock best denture cleaners available on the market which you can use yourself!

Whatever you do, do not attempt to scratch off the hardened yellow plaque with a knife; this makes very fine scratches on the acrylic which only ensure that the build up will repeat itself. If you find that you've already attempted this, do not worry, we can restore the denture to it's smooth finish and minimize the risk of this happening again.

How often do I need to get my dentures professionally cleaned?

When you start to find that despite your best efforts to keep the dentures clean, you cannot get them to pristine condition, then it is time book an appointment with us to get your dentures professionally cleaned and polished.

Can I sleep with my dentures in?

It is best not to in order to give your gums a rest however it is OK to sleep with them in if you thoroughly clean your dentures on a regular basis and maintain regular checkups with your Clinical Dental Technician or Dentist.

What is an immediate denture?

When you have teeth extracted you have two options: to go 'gummy' for 6 months until the sockets have healed, or, to have denture made so that you have those teeth replaced “immediately”.

An immediate denture is where prior to having your teeth extracted, we take impressions of your mouth and make a denture that restores your teeth as they are yet at the same time enhancing or if you choose, completely rebuilding your smile; all of which is a process you have complete control over.

It is important to keep in mind that it is most likely that your immediate denture will get loose sometime after 4-6 months after you had your teeth extracted. This is when a reline is recommended.

My denture is loose. Will I have to use glue forever?

Not necessarily. The bone in your jaw slowly shrinks over time and this is often the reason why dentures become more loose over time. Our same-day reline services can save you from needing to go toothless for a day or more!

What is a reline?

When you have a denture made, the fitting surface of the denture is a duplication of what your gums looked like at the time you first had them made. Over time the bone beneath the gum shrinks and this makes the denture loose. A reline is where we renew the fitting surface, updating it to what you have presently and this helping minimizing the looseness.

I'm struggling to speak clearly unlike before. What is happening to me?

A badly made denture can affect your speech patterns however, even a slightly loose denture can affect how you enunciate which is both frustrating and embarrassing. A reline or a slight adjustment could be the solution. You do not have to put up with this; give us a call today!

I seem to be getting food stuck under my dentures which wasn't a problem in the past. Does this mean I need new dentures?

Not necessarily. More often than not, a reline may help minimize the problem.

My partial denture is loose but everything else is fine. Do I really need to use glue forever?

The looseness in a partial denture can be caused by a few things or a combination:If the bone has shrunk, this will cause the denture to move when you bite, chew and talk; a reline may be required.

The stainless-steel wires that clip around your teeth may have come loose; we may be able to adjust this back into position or, we can replace it with a brand new clasp.

My lower denture has always been too painful to use. Why do I struggle yet others I know do not?

Everyone's gums are different in shape, size and consistency. Some people unfortunately have it worse than others, making denture use in general more difficult compared to their friends and family. The hard acrylic is harsh on the gums, causing ulcers and makes chewing almost impossible without pain.

A soft line reline may make denture use far easier for you!

What is a “soft reline”?

When you have a reline, you have two options: to renew the fitting surface with the same hard acrylic that you have now, or, to have the fitting surface lined with a soft silicone. The soft reline is extremely popular with patients around the world.

My dentures have broken and I tried to glue them back together but it doesn't seem to hold. Can this be repaired?

In most situations, yes, this can be repaired and depending on the severity of the damage, we can do this in the same day.

My dentures have broken in the past and are constantly getting repaired. Is there no real solution?

Dentures that are constantly cracking or breaking need to be reinforced with something stronger than the high-impact acrylic the dentures are constructed of. If you are wearing a full denture, we can do this by reinforcing the denture with a cobalt-chrome alloy: none of which is visible when you smile!

If you are wearing an acrylic partial denture, the best solution is to have a cobalt-chrome partial denture. Not only is this far superior to the acrylic denture but they are also up to 4x thinner!
